National Sunglasses Day 2026
Celebrate National Sunglasses Day with The Vision Center at Seaside Farms
Saturday, June 27th, 2026 is National Sunglasses Day. This day raises awareness about the importance of protecting your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays while encouraging healthy vision habits year-round. Only a little over 1 in 4 sunglasses purchased today offer adequate UV protection for your eyes. With almost 75% of sunglasses only serving as a fashion accessory.
At The Vision Center at Seaside Farms, we love helping patients find sunglasses that not only look great but also provide essential protection for their eyes and vision.
Why National Sunglasses Day Matters
Many people think sunglasses are mainly a fashion accessory, but they are actually an important part of preventative eye care.
Just like your skin, your eyes can be damaged by UV radiation from the sun. Over time, prolonged UV exposure may increase the risk of:
- Cataracts
- Macular degeneration
- Photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye)
- Growths on the eye such as pinguecula and pterygium
- Premature aging around the eyes
UV damage is cumulative, meaning your eyes experience the effects over many years of exposure. That’s why daily protection matters — especially here in the Charleston area where outdoor activities, boating, beach days, golf, and sports are part of everyday life.
Polarized sunglasses can be especially beneficial for driving, fishing, boating, and outdoor sports because they help reduce glare reflected from water, roads, and other surfaces.
Here’s The Vision Council’s complete list of suggestions for the day:
- Wear sunglasses when spending time outdoors.
- Post a selfie on social media of yourself wearing a favorite pair of sunglasses. (Don’t forget the hashtag #SolarFlair.)
- Spread the word about UV-safety and the importance of protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.
