Our first genetic test results for macular degeneration

Today was very exciting for our practice – we received our first report back from the Macula Risk Genetic Test! The Macula Risk test is a DNA test that helps us determine your risk level for developing vision loss associated with age related macular degneration (AMD). Based on that risk level, we will know more about how often you should be evaluated and what steps we should be taking now to ensure your vision remains as healthy as possible. The test is done in office and only involves a simple swab of the inside of your cheek – just like you see them do on CSI. The results take about 6 weeks to come back and the report is very easy to understand (see below). Based on your genetic results as well as age, height/weight, current disease state, and lifestyle factors, you are assigned a Macula Risk Score ranging from 1- 5. A 1 has the lowest likelihood of progressing while a 5 has the highest. The patient below as a score of 3 which means we will be monitoring him a little more frequently so that we can spot any progression sooner and be able to initiate treatment before damage occurs. If you have any questions about the Macula Risk Test or would like to schedule your test, please contact us and we will be glad to help!
